After being sent some very moving lyrics from a friend, Roy Matthews I have written the music and sung this song entitlled ‘Window in Heaven’. The words were written by Roy after losing his mum and a lot of us will be able to relate to the sentiment here. I went into the studio and sang the vocal only once so here is the ‘live’ studio recording’ I made of the song with Bob Heatle who added the strings and bass as overdubs later.

Listen to the song here: WINDOW IN HEAVEN

For any musicians that wish to play this song here are the words and chords.

Window in Heaven – key G – Kenny Herbert & Roy Matthews

G Am
Like a rose in the winter
C#m G
That withers and dies
G Am
Like the passing of time
C#m G
Through an older mans eyes
G Am
You stay in my memory
C#m G
That I know won’t fade
Em Am C D7
You’ll always be with me you’re never away

v. 2: The sun in my childhood, that shone in your eyes
Reflected in your tear, as you tried not to cry
You stay in my memory That I know won’t fade
And though you’re not with me you’re never away

Chorus
Bb F
If I had a window in heaven for a day
Bb F
If I could just see you one last time
Dm Am7 Bb F
My heart would be happy to know you’re okay
Gm C7
Yes a window in heaven would be fine……today

v. 3:

F Gm
There’s a box of your life
Bbm F
In a drawer by the door
F Gm
I look at your lifes story
Bbm F
You’re with me once more

(solo, chords) C#/ F / Dm / Am7 / Bb / C7 E7

v. 4: A/ Bm / Dm/ A / Bm / Dm / A/ Bm / Dm/A / F#m / Cm / D / E7
I see you in the sunset, I hear you in the wind
You’re every breath I take, every song that I sing

Chorus C/G/ Em / Bm/ C/G/Am/D7………G

Waving to Trains is a new song I have written in a contemperary style, inspired by a walk in Dalmeny and a talk about childhood with Caroline on a bridge next to the Forth Rail Bridge in Edinburgh where as a kid she used to wave to the trains that passed from a small bridge at The Glebe. Again produced by my great pals, David Paton who also played Guitar and Bass, Lawrie Ball on Piano and both sang backing vocals. Waving to Trains – available to download on iTunes, https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/waving-to-trains/id573167526?i=573167655

I met Ola at a recording session in Notting Hill, London over 12 years ago, since then we have become great friends and have co-written on a number of songs. This man has an immense musical talent and is one of the most underated performers on the planet.

OLA has guested and/or shared stages with some of America’s finest soul and jazz artists including Diane Reeves, Maceo Parker, Gladys Knight, Al Jarreau, Patti Labelle, Roberta Flack, Joe Zawinul, Natalie Cole, Raul Midon, David Sanborn, Incognito, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Randy Newman. and Roy Hargrove. OLA’s music has appeared in films such as N’est Tres Pas Catholique and Second Hand Lions featuring Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.

OLA has performed at many UK and international festivals including The Edinburgh, Leverkusen, Ingolstadt and Aalener Jazz Festivals. OLA has performed at many of the world’s famous jazz venues including several sell out runs at Ronnie Scotts London, Kennedy Center Washington, shows at Blue Note in New York, Joe’s Public Theater, The Jazz Club In Minden and Quasimodo’s in Berlin.

OLA has been a regular guest on BBC Radio 4′s Loose Ends, As well as performances on BBC London BBC World Service programmes. In March 2007, PBS WCNY filmed A concert by OLA in Syracuse, in the state of New York.

OLA Continues to work with other artistes in the role of Songwriter and Producer.

The press say “As a vocalist, he possesses a stunning voice of enormous range and emotional clout”. His voice is “beautifully clear and appealingly textured, almost classical …with a range and elasticity to match his rich tonal qualities”. “The influences of Soul, Jazz and the West African music of his childhood come together in subtle and sophisticated melodies and time signatures.” and “OLA’s songs feature lyrics that are layered with metaphor and allegory. OLA seemlessly documents the issues of the day with the universal subjects of love and loss.”

While Moray was growing up, he was greatly influenced by his father’s passion for the music of Jolson, Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin and Sinatra. Their music inspired him to follow a career in music.

On leaving school, Moray studied music privately and spent most of his teens and 20’s playing in funk, soul and rock bands in search of the elusive record deal. Successes at this time included many live television appearances and invites on radio stations.

When Moray reached 28 years old, he joined the Army as a musician and became principal saxophonist in the Band of the Black Watch, laterally the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. It was in the early days of Moray’s military career, while based in Hong Kong that he was encouraged to use and develop his singing ability. Keen to extend his repertoire, Moray took the gamble and began to introduce some Sinatra Big Band charts to instant positive response! People began to remark how similar Moray’s voice was to Sinatra’s. Buoyed by this enthusiasm, he continued to sharpen and build up his act and has performed twice in the space of a year, with the Scottish Festival Orchestra at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to capacity audiences.

Now that Moray has completed his career in the Forces, he is fully commited to promoting big band music and do his bit to keep Sinatra’s music live. He was once asked why he emulates “a dead guy”; his reply is as follows: “in recent years, Frances Albert Sinatra’s music has been recognised as classic, something that was given to the world and is here to stay, just as surely as Mozart or Beethoven. Why are there so many Elvis’s, Dean Martins, Sammy Davis’s and Francis Albert Sinatras? It’s because the public want the live experience; there’s nothing like live music and unfortunately the Greats aren’t here anymore to give it to us. The best we can do is to tastefully attempt to recreate a piece of the magic they gave to us.”

Moray is now based in Edinburgh and is open to travel and perform his unique Sinatra set with a quartet, big band or just a piano player.

KENNY HERBERT & RAB HOWAT Over the last few years Kenny and Rab have written and recorded 5 albums recording sometimes at their spiritual home of Abbey Road 2. To create their original compositions they have pulled on all their personal thoughts and experiences to come up with melodies and lyrics that reflect their own feelings of everyday life, and that of their great heroes ‘The Beatles’. After being invited a couple of times by Spencer Leigh to perform on BBC Radio Merseyside in Liverpool they recorded their albums ’ANOTHER POSITIVE LINE’ ‘Songs of our lives’ and ‘Famous Faces on a Bar Room Wall’ and ‘The last song in Abbey Road’.The ‘Famous Faces’ title coming from a pilgrimage that they make to Liverpool each year to play a ‘live session’ on the last Sunday in August at the world famous ‘WHITE STAR BAR’ in Mathew Street, Liverpool. David Paton has produced their last 4 albums and along with David’s brilliant playing and production and a couple of his own compositions you have a set of excellent albums of original songs considered timeless and endearing to the listener. Their originality and quality of the honest writing, excellent performances and production create the finished article, which is a real reflection of how timeless pop songs should be.

Hear them ‘live’ now at the place of your choice!

CALUMET CITY BLUES is a new Film Theme song I have written then recorded with Rab Howat and Davie Paton. ‘Calumet City Blues’ inspired by Charlies Newtons words in the book.

“I love the video, the song, and the band…and the girl. My only criticism is the first line of the song about the restaurant and seventeen years sounds forced, like you coerced them into writing it into the song because Mrs. Murphy does that. If they could change that first line to reflect the mood and location where the girl’s at in the video, on a 1 to 10, I’d have to give it a 10. Of course, you’re at a 9.9 now…Nah, fuck it, I’ll give it a 10 now. I really like the band, the song and the video… and the girl”

Chicago PD street legend Denny Banahan

CALUMET CITY is the debut novel from my friend from Chicago Charlie Newton….this a truly absorbing crime thriller that makes you believe you are there on that sidewalk and gives a real insight of how hard life can be sometimes in the Chicago Police Dept. I am doing some work with Charlie and have demoed ‘Calumet City Blues’ which hopefully you will be able to hear on a bigger stage in 2012…watch this space!

Meet Patti Black, the most decorated cop in Chicago. Solitary, stoic, loveless—her steel-plated exterior belies the wrenching legacy of an orphan childhood. Plagued by the horrifying abuse suffered at the hands of her foster parents, Black sublimates past torments into a meticulously maintained ghetto-tough persona.

When a series of unrelated cases—a drug bust gone bad, a mayoral assassination attempt, the murder of a state’s attorney; and ultimately, the exhumation of a long-concealed body from a tenement basement wall—all point in Patti Black’s direction, she finds herself facing the dark truth of a dusty old chestnut: You can’t hide from your history, no matter how far into the fog you run. For Patti Black, that history didn’t die in the tenement wall; it’s alive—and riding her down.

CALUMET CITY, Newton’s absorbing debut novel is a galloping ride from first page to last.”— Kirkus Reviews
“In Newton’s searing debut, confrontational and uncompromising Patti Black, Chicago’s most decorated cop, gets caught in a web of murder and betrayal. Newton, who based his heroine’s character on a real Chicago police officer, creates a netherworld full of violent and duplicitous people.” — Publishers Weekly
“Raw, heart-pounding, adrenalin-producing fiction doesn’t get much better than this. Highly recommended for all fiction collections.” —Michele Leber, Library Journal
“The literary equivalent of speeding down an amusement park water slide only to find an industrial strength meat grinder awaiting you at the bottom: By the time you realize what’s happening, it’s already much too late to turn back… an intense and explosive read destined to become a cult classic.” —Paul Goat Allen, The Chicago Tribune “Machine-gun street-demotic, high octane, adrenalin drenched and breathless.”—Cath Staincliffe, The Tangled Web, UK
